fish production in Hawaii: Ancient technology using modern materials"
- William Aila, Waianae Harbor Master
Aquaculture has been practiced in Hawaii for several centuries,
primarily in coastal fishponds, known locally as loko i'a.
These fishponds were -- and even today some still are -- stocked
with juvenile mullet, or pua, that are fed and grown in the enclosure
to harvest size. Ahi Nui Tuna Farming Co. is planning to establish
a tuna growout operation based on this principle. The project has
been initiated by local Hawaiian fishermen and majority ownership
of the Company is held by Hawaiians.
